Enamel Paints

Enamel paints are oil-based and give a consistent covering which holds the colour well.  They take a little longer to dry than acrylics but will give a nice hard coat finish without any sign of brush strokes once they have been given adequate time to dry.  They can be applied directly without the need for a primer making them easier to use than acrylics.  They are also easier to remove if needed.  We have a range of enamel paints to suit many different painting needs. A brand which has been popular with model builders for decades is Humbrol.

Frequently Asked Questions

Enamel paint is an oil-based paint that dries to a hard, glossy finish, making it ideal for models, miniatures, and scale kits that need durable colour and smooth surfaces.

Enamel paints typically take 6–24 hours to dry to the touch, depending on the brand, thickness, and environment. Full curing may take several days.

Yes! Enamel paint is great for hand painting. It levels well and offers excellent coverage, though you’ll want to use quality brushes and a steady hand.

Absolutely. Enamel paints can be thinned with enamel thinners and sprayed through an airbrush, giving a smooth, even finish with proper ventilation.

It’s best to use a primer first, especially on plastics or resin, to help the enamel adhere properly and prevent peeling or reactions with the surface.
