WILESCO D430 LOKOMOBILE STEAM TRACTION ENGINE - BLACK AND BRASS

The steam-powered D430 traction engine from Wilesco

Locomobiles were mainly used in agriculture around the turn of the century. They were used for plowing and threshing. At that time, the locomobiles could be installed in a mobile and stationary manner. The difference to automobiles was that they were often pulled to their destination by horses. But you could also drive yourself and move at a speed of 3 - 4 km / h. The details of the steam model D430 correspond to a traction engine that was common at the time. The brass kettle is 55 mm wide in diameter. It also has a separate smoke chamber for the condensate. This means that real steam comes out of the chimney, which can also be tipped in the middle using a hinge. The special thing is,

For initial steam fun, the D430 comes to your home with two pieces of our Witabs dry fuel. For longer steaming fun, please remember to order enough dry fuel!

The exciting story of the traction engine

Traction engines were mainly used by contract threshers. You could think of them as a kind of agricultural day laborer. They drove from farm to farm at harvest time and offered their services there.

At that time, your locomotives could be installed in a mobile and stationary manner. The difference to automobiles was that they were often pulled to their destination by horses. But you could also drive yourself and move at a speed of 3 - 4 km / h. Operation and strength development were only possible in a standing position.

Inferior fuel could conveniently be used to heat the locomotives. The fire box was even partially heated with straw or cheap wood. The steam engine built up a constant pressure and converted the heat into mechanical energy. The low volume was particularly advantageous here. The internal combustion engines caused a lot of noise at the time, because there the energy was generated as a sequence of explosions.

The traction engines were even used for heavy stationary work until the 1960s, mainly to drive stone crushers or wood chippers. After that they were largely replaced by the tractors. These had a more efficient cost-benefit ratio and were easier to operate.
