Despite being considered outdated by the beginning of the Second World War, the Gladiator continued to prove its fighting ability in overseas campaigns.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAlan Boyd was one of several notable Australian pilots to fly the Gladiator against Italian forces in the Middle East. A member of No. 3 Squadron RAAF, one of the service's celebrated \"Originals\", Boyd was credited with three enemy aircraft destroyed and another probable during the squadron's first combat engagement in the theatre.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOn 13 December 1940, Boyd claimed two further victories before his own Gladiator was damaged during the engagement, forcing him to land in the desert. Remarkably, he carried out running repairs to the aircraft's control lines and was able to take off again, returning to Gerawala airfield.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOver a six-week period, Boyd became a Gladiator ace, credited with at least six enemy aircraft destroyed.
