Non-passenger carrying Mk1s and multiple units based on the Mk1 concept continued in production until 1974.

Today, Mk1 coaches are used for charter services on the main line, by the likes of West Coast Railway Company, or on preserved railways such as the Severn Valley Railway, West Somerset, North Yorkshire Moors, East Lancashire and Spa Valley lines, to name but a few.

Mk1 coaches were built at many BR workshops as well as by outside contractors including Metro-Cammell, Cravens, and Gloucester RCW. An extensive range of vehicles was introduced to cover all manner of traffic demands and mixed uses that the railway took in its stride in the 1950s: from buffet counter catering to full restaurant service, First and Second Class accommodation including composite vehicles with some of each, guards’ brake vans and luggage/ newspapers/ parcels/ animal space, sleeping cars, various general merchandise and specialised Post Office vans and niche use vehicles constructed in small numbers such as horse boxes. These non-passenger vehicles were shorter in length (usually at 57 feet) than the standard 63 feet of their passenger counterparts.

The more common types that made up the majority of express and secondary passenger trains include First and Second Class, Composite, Open and Corridor, Suburban (compartment only), Brake, Buffet, Restaurant, and Sleeping cars. The study of prototypical train formations is an entire subject, and Bachmann Branchline provides the range of models to create these trains in model form.

During their working lives, Mk1 coaches have formed the backbone of all locomotive-hauled BR services at one time or another, until replacement by later Mk2 coaches, or multiple unit stock, in the case of many of the Mk1 Suburban non-corridor fleet. Many famous named trains such as the Flying Scotsman, Belfast Boat Express (a late steam turn that lasted into 1968), The Cornishman, Irish Mail, Thames-Clyde Express, Atlantic Coast Express (ACE), The Waverley, the Caledonian, Devonian, Mayflower and Master Cutler all comprised Mk1 coaches when newly introduced. In other cases they ran within or alongside train formations such as the Yorkshire Pullman, and made up the then numerous sleeper services that covered the length and breadth of the sixties railway network during the hours of darkness.

Loco-hauled Mk1s were in front line service for half a century, whilst their EMU counterparts and Thumper units lasted until the mid-2000s. As a result, the Mk1 family has carried the widest range of liveries of any passenger rated rolling stock, with only private owner wagons presenting a greater variety in UK railway history. Mk1s have worn BR Carmine and Cream, BR Western Region Chocolate and Cream, BR Southern Green, BR Maroon, BR Blue, Blue and Grey, InterCity Executive, InterCity Charter, Network South East, Regional Railways, ScotRail, Sealink, Departmental, BR Exhibitions, Royal Mail, Travelling Post Office, Rail Express Systems, Provincial Trans Pennine, Parcels Red, West Highland Green and Cream, not to say a myriad of post-privatisation and heritage colour schemes in preservation. Design and construction followed on from the universal and ubiquitous Mk1 family of coaching stock, with the prototype example built in 1963. They were of steel construction, and of a more monocoque design than the Mk1, which added to their safety and integrity in event of collision or mishap.

As passenger expectations and railway operations had moved on since the vast Mk1 range was conceived, and because there was still much life left in the Mk1s by the mid-sixties, a much reduced number of vehicle types were built. The basic Mk2 types included First and Second class accommodation, with corridors and compartments only available to First Class passengers, all Second Class coaches were conceived as open saloons. First and Second class Brake coaches were built, but no full brakes, catering cars, restaurants, buffets or sleeping cars were included, Mark 1 coaches fulfilling these needs until Mark 3s came along in the late seventies.

The Mark 2 family underwent a number of tweaks and improvements during the 12 years construction period. The L&MR considered the possibility of creating a third class as early as 1839, due largely to market pressure from the MB&BR and M&LR, but the directors were afraid that, with its lower fares, it would draw passengers away from the first and second class trains.

The introduction of third class travel on the L&MR dates to April 1844, when the Board ordered new enclosed second class coaches to replace the older ‘blue boxes’, which were then downgraded to third class. Furthermore, Southern Railway continued to build new coaches to the design of the three largest companies. The Maunsell carriage was intended to be the standard carriage design for use across the Southern Railway lines, incorporating the best features of each of the former companies' designs. Maunsell Coaches were constructed between 1925 and 1936 at Eastleigh, with 1200 being built. The standard coach design was 59ft long and made from wood with steel sheeting. One feature of the coaches was the low window placement which while less of an issue when seated, meant that whilst stood up it was difficult to see outside the coach without ducking.

In 1929 this feature was amended, resulting in the introduction of ‘high window’ coaches, although on corridor coaches the low windows remained on the compartment side of the coach. In operation, coaches were grouper together to form sets. The intention was that coaches would remain in these sets for long durations, with the set numbers appearing at the brake end of the set. 139 sets were created with loose stock being used to supplement the sets on busier trains. In August 1925, construction began on six First Class Dining Saloons for the Western Section. The first of a batch of twenty-six such vehicles under Diagram 2651, they were intended for the London-Bournemouth, London-Portsmouth and London-Exeter services and were of the low-windowed design. Seating twenty four passengers in four seating bays at one end and the kitchen, pantry, service vestibule and side corridor at the other, a set of double loading doors opened into the vestibule, while the passengers accessed the Restaurant from the gangways at either end. Four further low windowed Dining Saloons were completed between July and December 1929, intended for the inter-regional through sets and in May/June 1930, ten further Dining Saloons entered service, under Order 464, on West Country workings.

HORNBY OO BR(S), Mk1 Restaurant Buffet , S1696 - Era 5
The first standardised railway carriage design built by British Railways, the Mark 1 coach introduced in 1951 could be found across Britain’s railway network and continued to be produced until 1963, and even later in the form of multiple units and non-passenger stock. Along with being widely deployed, Mk1 coaches were built in various places including Derby, Doncaster, Eastleigh, Swindon, Wolverton and York. Most Mk1 coaches had 63ft 5in long underframes with 64ft 6in long bodies, although some were built shorter to be used on tighter curves where large overhangs would otherwise have prohibited running. In 1977 a reduction in the number of fatalities on British railways since 1955 was attributed to the introduction of the Mk1 coaches due to their steel build, strong underframe, and buckeye couplings making them far safer in the event of an accident. Mk1 coaches started to be withdrawn from widescale service in the 1990s, although in some regions, particularly in the south, Mk1 base multiple units continued to be used well into the 2000s.

Network rail continue to use modified Mk1 coaches for various departmental duties and rail tour operators continue to use Mk1 coaches on specially organised services. The Mk1 RB is a Mk1 Restaurant Buffet coach containing a kitchen and a serving buffet counter. As well as these features the coach would also feature seating, usually with a capacity of 23 passengers. The first phase of building British Railways' Mk1 catering vehicles followed the traditional pattern of dining that had been catered for since Edwardian times, with large Kitchen Cars preparing multiple course dining for consumption in both First and Third Class Dining Cars. However, during the early 1950s it became apparent that social patterns regarding rail travel catering were changing, a direct consequence of WWII attitudes towards dining. The catering department of British Railways was experiencing a demand from travellers for cheaper and lighter meals and was seeing an increase in social drinking that was not related to dining. This change in dining patterns meant that the use of a Buffet vehicle, rather than a full Kitchen Car/Dining Car combination, was sometimes a better option and the third phase 1957-62 Mk.1 building programme provided many of BR's vehicles with buffet facilities, not just in addition to full meal provision, but also replacing it. Propane gas units were used for gas cooking, reducing the reliance on electric power which, in turn, allowed for a smaller dynamo and battery.

HORNBY OO LSWR, 4 Wheel Coach, 3rd Class, 302 - Era 2
This four wheeled coach is a representation of the many which served on the London and South Western Railway (LSWR) in the late 19th and early 20th century. Two were built, with one being used for the up service and the other for the down service. Passengers couldn't reserve a seat in the observation car, instead a fee was charged for the use of the carriage by the hour. In reality the streamlined shape of the roof severely limited the views out the back of the carriage. In 1959, long after the 'Coronation' service had ceased, British Railways rebuilt the observation cars with a new un-streamlined end which featured much larger windows and a new seating arrangement to significantly improve the view with the cars being used on the famously picturesque west highlands line.

Formation (observation car and locomotive both turned and arranged depending upon direction of travel):

Brake Third (A) + Kitchen Third (Twin) (B)

Open First (C) + Open First (Twin) (D)

Open Third (E) + Kitchen Third (Twin) (F)

Open Third (G) + Brake Third (Twin) (H)

Tech Specs

Item Length - Without Packaging (cm)

29.1

Item Scale

1:76 Scale 00 Gauge

Finish

Painted

Colour

Blue

Operator

LNER

Designer

LNER

Livery

LNER Coronation Blue

Minimum Curve (mm)

Radius 2

Number of Parts

1

BRANCHLINE OO BR 9710 MK2F DBSO (Refurb.) These state-of-the-art models incorporate a wealth of fine detail, including separate metal grab handles on the roof and metal handrails on the end, plus etched horn grilles and separate window wipers. The interiors are detailed and decorated accordingly including window logos and representation of the internal mesh-walled luggage compartment. Not only is this model highly detailed and beautifully decorated, but it also features an integrated DCC decoder which controls interior lighting – including separately controlled cab, guard’s compartment, and passenger saloon lights – directional lights and the door interlock lights for a fully authentic operating experience. It was also designed to be much stronger than previous designs, to provide better protection for passengers in the event of a collision or derailment.

An unusual feature of the design was the bodyside tumblehome curvature, of 28 ft (8.53 m) radius and just noticeable; the windows had flat glass and consequently the upper quarter was separate and in a different plane from the lower glazing, with an intervening transom, and the steel panels were recessed on either side of each window opening to accommodate the difference between the flat glass and the curved sides. The train ran between London and Edinburgh in as little time as 6 hours. The service was formed by a rake of four pairs of specially designed streamlined coaches with the addition of a streamlined observation car, other than in the winter when the short period of daylight precluded the views. One service was run in each direction each day, the down service departing London for Edinburgh at 16:00pm, and the up service leaving Edinburgh at 16:30pm. Services were usually pulled by an A4 Class locomotive, commonly liveried to match the rest of the train.

The coaches were based upon the successful Silver Jubilee design and featured extensive attempts to reduce drag and increase comfort including the use of articulated pairs of coaches sharing bogies which limited the gap between the coaches, and aerodynamic underframe skirting. In total, 4 sets of coaches were built plus the two observation cars. 2 sets were used for 'Coronation' (and 'Talisman'; the return service) 1 set for the West Riding Limited service to Leeds, and 1 spare set which could be used for any of the preceding services. After the war, the services were not resumed, and the sets were split up.

After a fire in 1951, additional doors were added to the twin sets to reduce the time needed to disembark in emergencies.
